There has been a lot of discussion about Olitz’s favorite song being played during the funeral and Fitz’s killing of Verna. Some commentaries focus on the fact that it represents a death of Olitz’s relationship and a possible rebirth of a new one in the future.
I partially agree with that but think it goes deeper. The Light, when used, represents a certain type of innocence for both Olivia and Fitz. Their one minutes are contained in The Light. The very title of this particular piece of music even evokes the thought of having a guiding light in our lives, of having love, of having someone, at the end of the day, that you trust.
So to play The Light at the moment when Fitz finds out Olivia’s culpability is the moment Fitz loses it. Loses that light inside of himself and his trust in their relationship. Fitz can’t have one minutes because he no longer trust them. His gut, when it comes to Olivia, has been thrown into mass confusion. And when you have no hope, no belief that things will get better, no prospects that you can be any better?
There is nothing but darkness. That moment where The Light played represented the last moments of light in Fitz life darkened. Blackened. Tainted.
I think the music will come back again as will The Light for both characters. But for right now, Fitz is living in the darkness.

Amazing analysis from MiltonSong!
The loss of the light and Fitz being thrust into darkness is driven home perfectly here. I know people have been critical of the fact that Fitz and Olivia would not communicate for 10 months, but I really think some have underplayed the impact the rigging (and Verna’s murder) has on Fitz. His world has literally ended. The only thing he had faith in was Olivia and their love. The rigging has made him doubt Olivia’s motives and even to some extent, whether or not she ever truly loved him.
As the audience, we know that’s crazy, but to Fitz, his universe just got knocked off kilter. I understand and believe this would be enough to drive him away fro Olivia. He’s devastated. And Olivia has always had one foot out the door when it comes to fear of rejection, so Fitz saying the horrible things he did to her in 213 makes it 100% plausible she would follow his lead and end communication.
Again, it doesn’t seem possible to us as the audience knowing the reality of the depth of their love for each other, but as we all know, it is often easier to believe the worst about ourselves than to hope for dreams that seem too good to be true.
Fitz and Olivia will find their way back to The Light, but it won’t be easy.
I agree with the fact that Fitz finding out that Olivia was part of rigging the election was devistating to him as she was the one that he trusted and went to but lets look at the relationship between the two of them up until this point and see that they have both done wrong but Olivia is getting the shorter end of the stick when it comes to blame.
In season one episode one Olivia is called to by Fitz to come and help “fix” the Amanda Tanner problem. When Olivia meets him @ Camp David so she can look him in the eye and see that he is telling the truth about not sleeping with her, he does just that and looks her in the eye and says “I didnt do it, and you know I only love one person (meaning Liv)”. Liv then took that information and went and destroyed Amanda Tanner as she went with her “gut” and believed that Fitz had not lied to her. His explination is that he got vulnerable after Liv left him and broke his heart and Liv is one angry he lied to her and she believed him, and second that he had slept with someone else when she had not been with anyone else. There was a scene when they were standing at the window watch the prospective judge talking with his wife and he was talking about forgiveness and love and inferring that Liv should forgive him bc they love eachother.
Then they went to “war” in regards to Amanda Tanner when Liv found out that Fitz had lied and she felt responsible and took Amanda on as her client. Cyrus then wove a web of deception that lead Fitz to think Liv was setting him up and sent the explicit CD of him having sex with Amanda. They each found out that they were put against eachother by Cyrus and he killed Amanda but some damage between them was done. Liv was hurt that he would sleep with Amanda and bold face lie to Liv and use her to clean up the mess. Now that was wrong!
Now jump ahead to tree gate when she calls on Eddison for information about thorngate and Fitz gets pictures of them together talking and gets jealous and angry. This leads to having Cyrus send for her to meet him hunting. Here Fitz shows his jealous angry side when he assumes that she is back with Eddision. He accuses her of sleeping with him and tells here he knows all about their past. I mean he has someone following her and photographing her to keep tabs on her. Begin protective is one thing but jealous and angry for no reason is another. Liv finally has had it and says that he cant just send for her when he wants and she is not his and its over.
I love the two of them together and as we see through the flashbacks of how their relationship and connection evolved and grew stronger we realize that both of them have trust issues and abandoment issues and find comfort in eachothers arms. What I see is that Liv has given her all to this man. She loves him, she believes in him, she knows him, she knows what he is thinking or feeling before he says it. Yes she agreed to rig the election but it was out of love and the fact that she knew he was meant to be President and she was so invested in him and saw the interaction with his father and saw where his hurt came from and could not bare for him to lose so that he would them believe that he was a loser and never going to succeed in politics like his father had stated.
I feel that it was wrong for Liv to make the choice about rigging the election but she did not do it for power or to gain anything she was the only one that did not gain a position from the election but she did it out of pure LOVE! Liv’s life has been hell since she made her decision and she has been running from it and paying for it ever since. Her and the DC5’s decision affected many lives and Liv has been the one fixing and cleaning it up.
In season one episode 7 Olivia was even willing to say that she was the one on the tape with Fitz to take the light off the fact that Amanda the intern was dead. Fitz was ready to resign so he could divorce Mellie and be with Olivia and he told her that and they had a passionate momment in the Oval Office. Liv was ready to let him do that but was again convinced by Cyrus Ftiz was made to be in the whitehouse and the guilt got to her and she came together with Mellie to save his presidency.
I see that both Olivia and Fitz have equal parts in hurting eachother in this realtionship. I see that Fitz has wanted her to forgive him and she has and has bent them over for him and feel Fitz needs to really look at what Liv did and see the whole picture.
